More than 300 local youth athletes, coaches and parents attended to learn about sports safety issues such as concussions, overuse injuries, the importance of pre-participation exams and being prepared with CPR, first aid and AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hopeysheart.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/hopeysday-Article-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hopeysheart.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/hopeysday-Article-2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"hopeysday - Article (2)\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>\u201cHopey\u2019s Day\u201d was proclaimed on March 8<sup>th<\/sup>, 2014 in Pembroke Pines, Florida in honor of Maureen \u201cHopey\u201d Vaz, who died of multiple organ failure on March 9<sup>th<\/sup>, 2013. The event, held at Charles Flanagan High School, where Vaz\u2019s son attended, Chris Vaz, allowed participants to go through a series of 10-minute sessions that focused on key areas of sports injury prevention.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hopeysheart.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/hopeysday-article.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-537 alignright\" style=\"clear: right;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hopeysheart.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/hopeysday-article-e1395091256675-300x400.jpg\" alt=\"hopeysday - article\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hopeysheart.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/hopeysday-article-e1395091256675-300x400.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hopeysheart.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/hopeysday-article-e1395091256675-600x800.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Hopey\u2019s Day also included \u201cHopey\u2019s Challenge,\u201d involving a 3pt contest for 6 of the participants. Each athlete received an autographed postcard from Tina Charles that had sports safety tips from Safe Kids Worldwide on the back. At the end, Heartsmart and SafeKids Worldwide surprisingly donated 47 AEDs to Hopey\u2019s Heart Foundation to achieve its goal of reaching 100 recipients each year. Hopey\u2019s Heart Foundation currently had 53 recipients.
